How to Apply for a Sign Permit

What You’ll Need (Checklist)

  • Completed Planning Application Form. Download here.
  • Sign Permit Checklist
  • Email the completed application & plans in PDF format to planningdept@cityofsolvang.com.
  • Payment of application fee (cash or check) as required by the Master Fee Schedule.
  • Preliminary Signage Plan including:
    • Project site address and assessor parcel number.
    • Total number of signs proposed.
    • Total square footage of all proposed signs, and combined square footage if the building has multiple tenants.
    • Specifications for each sign:
      • Height, length, and depth of sign.
      • Largest letter height (if applicable).
      • Materials used.
      • Ground clearance for projecting/hanging signs (from finished grade to bottom of sign).
      • Projection distance from building (for projecting signs).
      • Mounting hardware details.
      • Lighting details, including illumination type (e.g., LED) and total watts per square foot.
    • Color photographic renderings:
      • Mockup of the proposed signs.
      • Simulated depiction on the building/location.
      • Graphic scale, if available.

How to Apply — Step by Step

  1. Prepare your submittal with all required checklist items above.
  2. Submit your application by email or at the public counter and pay fees.
  3. Staff reviews for compliance with zoning, design standards, and the Sign Ordinance.
  4. Design Review Committee (DRC) review, if required. Staff will notify you and schedule the item.
  5. Decision & permit issuance. A building/electrical permit may also be required for installation.
  6. Install your sign per approved plans and complete any required inspections.

Notes: Staff will determine CEQA applicability after submittal. Building permits may be required for structural support or lighting.
