The City of Solvang is dedicated to protecting the rights of renters and landlords and promoting fair housing choice. We want everyone to know that discrimination in housing is illegal, and provide you with the resources you need to resolve issues.

Fair Housing Laws

The State of California Department of Civil Rights (formerly known as the Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH)) is an agency of California state government charged with the protection of residents from employment, housing and public accommodation discrimination, and hate violence. 

Discrimination in housing rental, sales and financing on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, marital status, source of income, disability or familial status is prohibited by Federal (Fair Housing Act).

Rental Housing Problems

The City's Code Enforcement Division opens up code enforcement cases when there are potential code violations. Property owners responsible for code violations are given the opportunity to correct the situation and comply with current codes without penalty. Common housing code violations include: leaking water, lack of smoke detectors, lack of a heating (central or wall heater), extreme unsanitary premises, broken windows, deteriorated fencing, and exposed wiring, etc. To report such a violation, please fill out a code compliance form online, or speak to our code compliance division at (805) 688-5575 ext. 240
