About Jim Richardson
  • A 4th generation native born in Southern California educated in, Lakewood, Bellflower and Yokohama Japan.
  • Attended University of Maryland and University of California Extensions in Japan, and Weber State College in Utah.
  • Married 58 years to Jeanette Johnston Richardson, with 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandsons.
  • Member of U.S. Air Force 1958 - 1962 as a computer specialist.
  • Employed as a field engineer on the Ballistic Early Warning System in Thule Greenland. Transferred to Salt Lake City, Utah. Resided there for 25 years working in all phases of computer main frame hardware and software maintenance; in leadership positions and customer relations.
  • Transferred to Orange County California as a field manager in 1988. Spent 10 years in various administrative positions dealing with large and small corporations and various governmental agencies.
  • In 1998 transferred to the Santa Barbara area, moving to Solvang. Retired in 2000 after 38 years in the computer industry.
Civic Background
Since arriving in Solvang Jim has been a City Council observer, attending most Council meetings. He was appointed to the Solvang Planning Commission in 2000, and to the Parks and Recreation Commission in 2005. He was appointed to the Solvang City Council in late 2005, elected to City Council in 2006.  In 2008, he was elected as the City's first elected Mayor.

Jim's Council Committee assignments are: Finance and the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indian Subcommittee.  He is a member of the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG), the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control Board (SBCAPCD), and the APCD Hearing Board Nominating Committee.  He is also a CalVans Board Member, a Santa Barbara County Tax Payer Association Board Member, a LAFCO Commissioner, and sits on the Santa Barbara County/City Selection Committee.

Other Organizations

Jim is active in several organizations: The Solvang Vikings, American Legion, Danish Brotherhood, Rebild Society, Solvang Chamber of Commerce, Solvang Senior Center, Elverhoj Museum, Stewart Gildred Family YMCA, Santa Ynez Historical Museum, and Santa Ynez Valley Men's Forum.

Interests & Hobbies
Since his retirement Jim's interests lie in recreation and as such he is a proponent of Solvang and Santa Ynez Valley parks. He is also interested in seeing the objectives of the Valley Blueprint being carried out. Jim is concerned that we are 17 years into a 20 year plan and the fervor generated by the Valley Blueprint Plan is dying out and needs to be rekindled.

Jim's hobbies include boating, softball, computers and investing.
