2003 Aerial Photo Project |
2003 FLYOVEROn October 17, 2003 Solvang's Public Works Department commissioned an aerial survey of the entire city. Over 100 aerial photographs were taken by a special plane equipped with the latest cameras and onboard GPS devices. After being developed and adjusted for camera angle, elevation and overlap these photographs were seamlessly combined and incorporated into Solvang's ever expanding GIS (Geographic Information System) database. The photographs have a resolution of just 3 inches and are tied to State Plane and GPS Coordinate Systems. A GIS database is basically an incredibly accurate map which has data linked to every object in the map. It is a visual representation of a great deal of information. The map is only the "Tip of the Iceberg". This data is organized and studied and helps the city keep accurate and important information about Solvang's water, sewer, storm drain, pavement, street trees, vegetation, and other city objects and resources. |
